The Luxury Insiders : Carlos Huber, Arquiste Parfumeur

ARQUISTE is certainly one of the most luxurious brands in the fragrance industry. The collection offers different scents that transport to evocative moments in history. The brand has even created scents for the St. Regis hotels, one of the most prestigious hotel group in the world, and I would love to get my hands one of these candles for our new house! Here, the brand’s perfumist, Carlos Huber, answers to my Luxury Insiders questionnaire.

What does luxury mean to you?

Luxury to me needs to be inspiring…a luxurious scent is one that has the power to envelop and transport you. It goes beyond a simple pleasure, it speaks to you, and can even be emotional experience. That’s what makes a scent be really extra-ordinary.

How would you describe your job?

Fragrance designer and architect.

What are the first things you do when you wake up in the morning?

First, I make my bed and prepare a cup of coffee. Then I check work emails while I prepare for the gym.

What do you like the most about your job?

The travel. It’s so rewarding. I love discovering new cities, countries and cultures, and I also love returning to places I love. It’s extremely rewarding to meet the ARQUISTE retailers and clients around the world…its what this world is about, building connections and creating memories.

Who are you most inspired by and why?

Architects and historians. Architecture and history are my passion.

What would you tell people who aspire to work in your industry?

Be prepared for the fierce competition, but don’t lose sleep over it. Once you understand who you are as a creative person and what your brand is about, don’t hesitate or doubt yourself.

Who influenced you in your career?

My mentors Jorge Otero-Pailos (architect an artist) and Rodrigo Flores-Roux (perfumer).

What skill set is needed to do what you do?

The skill set of an organized (and creative) project manager in design…with a good nose and a little bit of a romantic/emotional streak.

It’s perfume after all…so you need to be very meticulous, but also swoon a little.

What’s the most common misconception people have regarding your industry?

That it’s an easy way to make a good margin on retail. It’s a rewarding industry, but it’s one that requires a lot of patience and time to build.

What’s the best career advice you ever received?

Don’t ever compromise your values.
